Natural Cures For Insomnia
By Linda Kristina
Do Suffer From Insomnia? There are some natural cures for insomnia that may be effective, but before trying them it would help if you can pinpoint the causes……and there are many of them. Whether your insomnia problems are occasional or chronic – some general reasons for insomnia can include: - Restless leg syndrome - Certain medications - Depression - Hormonal imbalance - Certain illness These causes may result in chronic insomnia and need to be addressed first. Chances are natural remedies and even sleep medication won’t help much here. Talk to your doctor if you suffer from any of the causes listed above. If you can resolve them, then chances are your sleep patterns may improve. On the other hand, if you suffer from insomnia due to: - General stress - Vitamin/mineral deficiency - Certain foods (like caffeine and/or sugar) - Lifestyle changes that interrupt sleep (shift work, new born baby..) Natural remedies and simple life style changes can be helpful. Most natural insomnia remedies generally contain herbal ingredients – like chamomile and valerian root - to help relax the mind and body - allowing you to fall asleep naturally. Many remedies also address the vitamin/mineral deficiency issue by providing calcium, magnesium, and potassium to help relax and calm the nervous system. An even better remedy would be one that also adds a small dose of amino acids such as tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin….all essential for inducing feel good, relaxing hormones. Also, you can stimulate your own amino acid/hormone production by adopting a few simple lifestyle changes. Try to get some sunlight on your body/face at least 15 -30 minutes a day. Do not wear sunglasses during this time. Your body needs to absorb the full spectrum light from the sun and it does it best through the eyes. Did you know that up to 98% of sunlight is absorbed through the eyes? This full spectrum light helps your body produce the feel good hormones – like serotonin – which at night is converted to melatonin. Melatonin is not only good for producing good sleep, but some studies suggest it provides antioxidant benefits for the body and brain. Want an even better tip? Try exercising outdoors in the sunlight. Besides getting a good dose of feel good hormones from the sun, exercise also helps produce these hormones and helps release excess stress – providing a better foundation for a good night’s sleep.
