Is Your Sunscreen Safe? Could It Cause Cancer?
By Linda Robsion of Wrinkle Free Skin Tips
Is Your Sunscreen Safe? We lather ourselves with sunscreen daily - winter and summer - because we want to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Yet how do we know how safe our sunscreen is? The main reason we use sunscreen is to prevent skin cancer, but researchers started to question not only the ability of some sunscreens to protect us from cancer, but whether or not sunscreens could CAUSE cancer. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group analyzed over 785 different types of sunscreens on the market – yes there are that many sunscreens on the market today! What they found was astounding…..Out of the 785 sunscreens over 84% of them contained chemical ingredients with questionable safety. And, many did not provide sufficient protection from UVA/UVB rays. In addition, they found that these questionable chemicals may alter estrogen levels within the body and generate free radicals which can have a negative impact on DNA causing cellular damage and cancer. The two lead researchers, Dr. Frank Garland and Dr. Cedric Garland from University of California also found some evidence that these chemicals offer little protection against basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. They also refer to a recent international study that found the highest amount of melanoma cases just happened to occur in countries where chemical based sunscreens are used the most. So what chemicals have they identified as being harmful? There are 5 on their list and they are as follows: • octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) • benzophenone-3 • 4-MBC (4-methyl-benzylidene camphor) • PABA • octyl- homosalate The first one - octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) - is the most common one found in many sunscreen products and has been show in laboratory tests to kill off mouse cells, even when used at lowest dose possible. So What To Do? What's the Best Sunscreen? Well obviously, stay away from any products that contain the 5 chemicals listed above. Your best bet is to stick with natural sunscreens like zinc oxide. Read the label before buying and make sure the product states Natural Sunscreen. Also, look for sunscreens that contain pomegranate extract, green extract, or other antioxidants to not only help prevent sun damage, but free radical damage too. |
